How to Write a Killer Limerick
The secret is the rhythm. It follows an AABBA structure.
- Lines 1, 2, and 5 (A): Rhyme with each other. They have 3 beats (da DUM da da DUM).
- Lines 3 and 4 (B): Rhyme with each other. They are shorter (2 beats).
- The Twist: The last line should always be the punchline or the surprise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are limericks always dirty?
Not at all. While there is a history of "bawdy" tavern limericks, the modern trend is observational humor—venting about work, dating, or life in general without needing to be crude.
What is the rhyme scheme of a limerick?
Limericks follow a strict AABBA rhyme scheme. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme with each other (and have 3 beats). Lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other (and have 2 beats).
